Routine Check Ups Q & A

What are routine check ups?

A routine check up is a preventive inspection that the team at Brody Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling at least twice a year, or once every six months. These routine visits ensure your child’s oral health remains strong and free of dental diseases, like tooth decay or gum disease.

What happens during routine check ups?

Routine check ups typically consist of a dental exam and teeth cleaning to inspect your child’s teeth and gums while removing any plaque and bacteria.

Dental exam

The dental exam portion of your child’s routine check up includes a visual assessment and X-ray imaging tests. During the visual inspection, the team checks your child’s face and jaw to spot any abnormalities, such as swelling. They also look at your child’s lips, tongue, and inner cheeks to identify any lesions or abnormal growths.

A dental exam allows the team to detect obvious signs of decay or dental damage. Teeth grinding, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), and even jaw clenching can also cause tooth erosion or cracked teeth.

Teeth cleaning

After the dental exam, the team performs a comprehensive teeth cleaning to remove plaque — a sticky type of bacteria — and tartar (hardened plaque) from your child’s teeth. While brushing and flossing are the best way to prevent tooth decay, only professional dental tools can remove hard tartar.

Next, the team uses a high-powered toothbrush to remove any leftover debris from your child’s teeth. They then floss and apply a strengthening fluoride treatment if necessary.

How can I prepare my child for routine check ups?

Not every child enjoys visiting the dentist, which is why it’s important that your child feel relaxed and comfortable at Brody Pediatric Dentistry. Fortunately, the practice includes a team of experienced pediatric dentists who have specialized training in treating children, including those with special needs.

To prepare for your child’s routine check up, you can:
